What Started Me Down

the Road to Redemption

I was born and raised in Pennsylvania and have lived in Florida since 2008. Years earlier, my identical twin brother and I packed our bags and moved to California with two friends, convinced we were destined to become rock stars. As you can probably guess, that dream never materialized. (The reason you've never heard any of our records is because we never made any!)

At the time, becoming a writer—especially a Christian writer—was the furthest thing from my mind. In fact, had someone asked me to list one hundred possible careers, writing wouldn't have made the list. Looking back now, it's just another reminder that God often has plans far greater than our own.

Growing up in a close-knit Irish-Catholic family, I was surrounded by love, discipline, and a deep respect for God. I attended Mass faithfully, served as an altar boy alongside my twin brother, and tried to do all the things I believed would draw me closer to Him. Yet despite all of that, I never experienced the personal relationship with God my heart longed for.

Everything changed one evening in 1991.

While out for a walk, I stopped outside a Catholic church and looked toward heaven.

With tears in my eyes, I prayed one of the simplest—and most honest—prayers I have ever prayed.

"I want to know You better. Please reveal Yourself to me. If You do, I'm all Yours."

I walked away convinced that nothing had happened. I couldn't have been more wrong.

In the days that followed, something remarkable began taking place. For the first time in my life, I developed an overwhelming hunger to read the Bible. The more I read, the more I realized that Christianity was not about religion, rituals, or trying to earn God's favor. It was about Jesus Christ.

When I finally repented of my sins and placed my faith in Him alone, everything changed. It remains the greatest day of my life.

Soon afterward, I came across a quote by Charles Spurgeon that has stayed with me ever since:

"A Bible that's falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn't."

That became my goal. I read the covers off my first two Bibles.

As I continued studying God's Word, I became convinced that salvation is entirely by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ—not by works, denomination, or religious tradition. That conviction has shaped every book I have written.

Whether through the CHAOS series, The Unannounced Christmas Visitor, I Never Knew You, or my future nonfiction books, my prayer has always been the same: To encourage believers, challenge seekers, and point people to the hope found only in Jesus Christ.
